COMARE Statement on Trawsfynydd
COMARE has been asked for its opinion of the recent Green Audit report concerning cancer in the area of Trawsfynydd in North Wales [1]. The authors of the report say that they used the same methodology as in an earlier report about cancer in Burnham North Ward. COMARE stands by its statement on this methodology in which Green Audit employed a completely inappropriate house survey data collection system. To reiterate, COMARE said of the Burnham study "Whilst the Green Audit report was intended to address the concerns of the local community, and did indeed involve them, it is so deeply flawed that it cannot provide any reliable information or conclusions about rates of cancer in Burnham. COMARE believes it is essential that Green Audit withdraws its report so as not to cause further unjustified local concern." COMARE notes that as the same methodology was apparently used in both the Green Audit Trawsfynydd and Burnham studies, the committee's comments apply equally to both studies. COMARE has itself reported on many studies into the incidence of cancer around nuclear installations and its conclusions are available on its web site. No positive findings of excess cancer rates around nuclear power stations have been demonstrated.
